AMC is shutting down Orphan Black: Echoes after just one season, according to the Hollywood Reporter. The Orphan Black sequel series — which was created and written by Anna Fishko (Fear the Walking Dead, Tyrant) and stars Krysten Ritter (Jessica Jones, Breaking Bad) — is set in the near future, in the same fictional world as the BBC cult series led by Tatiana Maslany, who won an Emmy for her portrayal of Sarah Manning, which ended in 2017.

According to its synopsis, Orphan Black: Echoes is set in 2052 and delves into the scientific manipulation of human existence. At the heart of the story is a group of women who insinuate themselves into each other’s lives and embark on an emotional journey unraveling the mystery of their identities and uncovering a heartbreaking tale of love and betrayal. Krysten Ritter plays Lucy, a woman with a difficult and unimaginable past, trying to find her place in the world.

Ahead of the series’ release, in an interview with THR, Krysten Ritter spoke about how difficult it is to launch a new project in today’s TV landscape: “There are so many platforms, and as a business decision, it’s a bonus to have existing IP, a marquee name, and a built-in fan base. So, it was appealing. And the reason why this felt good to me is because it’s its own thing. It doesn’t have the same DNA as the original show. It’s set in the same world. We have clones or prints, but it’s not the same. I’m not playing seven characters like Tatiana [Maslany]. We’re not remaking that show, so it felt like this show was its own thing, too.”
