Director Jon Watts has signed a first-look deal with Disney. This type of deal gives the studio priority on any projects Watts develops in the future, whether for Disney’s live-action division or 20th Century Studios. Jon Watts is best known for directing the Spider-Man films starring Tom Holland. After introducing Peter Parker in Captain America: Civil War, Marvel Studios was looking for a director who could evolve the character into his own film.

Watts’ work on Cop Car had already impressed both Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios, convincing them that he was the right person to bring Spider-Man: Homecoming to the big screen. The film, which followed Parker as he returned to high school, was a huge success, grossing $880 million worldwide. The success didn’t stop there. Jon Watts went on to direct the next two films in the trilogy, Spider-Man: Far From Home and Spider-Man: No Way Home, with the latter grossing over $1 billion at the box office.

The film also saw the return of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield as alternate versions of the hero, uniting generations of fans of the character. These accomplishments have made Watts a figurehead not only for superhero films but also for The Walt Disney Company. In addition to his work on Spider-Man, Watts has partnered with Disney to develop Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, a television series set in the Star Wars universe. The project follows a group of young heroes attempting to escape from a desperate situation in a distant galaxy.
