James Gunn’s adult animated series Creature Commandos will debut on the Max streaming service on December 5, and some spoilers for the series have surfaced online. While many of the details are vague or not particularly revealing (you can read them here), we do have one important piece of information to share, so here’s our final spoiler warning. Creature Commandos will reportedly feature Batman in the DCU… but only in silhouette! The Dark Knight’s shadow will reportedly be seen at some point, but since he never speaks, a voice actor has obviously not been cast for the role.
However, the first appearance of the U.C.D.’s Caped Crusader was on the air in the early 2010s. It’s a pretty big deal, and the scene in question could give us a glimpse of what to expect from the iconic hero’s eventual live-action debut. Creature Commandos will be the first project under the DCU banner before James Gunn’s Superman next year, and characters from the series have been confirmed to appear in live-action form in the Man of Steel reboot. It remains to be seen which members of this makeshift monster team will make the transition to the big screen, but set photos have revealed that Captain America: The Winter Soldier actor Frank Grillo will appear as Rick Flag, Sr.
The series will also star Maria Bakalova as Princess Ilana Rostovic and Indira Varma as The Bride, with Zoe Chaois as Nina Mazursky, Alan Tudyk as Dr. Phosphorus, David Harbour as Eric Frankenstein, Sean Gunn as G.I. Robot, and Steve Agee reprising his role as Peacemaker as John Economos. Sean Gunn will also voice Suicide Squad’s Weasel (though we’re not sure he can speak in full sentences) and Viola Davis will return as Amanda Waller. “Creature Commandos is an animated series, I wrote all the episodes, one thing we’re going to do a little differently at DC is transition the characters into animation, out of animation, usually with the same actor who voices them in live action,” Gunn said last year.
Earlier this year, Gunn confirmed that The Witcher actress Anya Chalotra (Yennefer) would voice Circe. The director also noted that all the series regulars have been announced, but “there are other interesting characters on the show played by other interesting actors.”
