One of DC Studios’ most anticipated DCU projects is Lanterns, a series that follows new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops caught up in a dark Earth mystery as they investigate a murder in the heartland of America. Chris Mundy (True Detective: Night Country) serves as showrunner and executive producer and will write Lanterns with Damon Lindelof (Watchmen) and comic book writer Tom King (Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow). CBM sat down with Tom King and artist Ryan Sook to discuss their new comic book series Black Canary: Best of the Best. Here, the site asked the writer to comment on the casting of Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre as Hal Jordan and John Stewart for the show.

“I would say I’m over the moon, but that’s not over the moon for a Lantern,” King told us. “You should see these two together. They have incredible chemistry and I couldn’t be more excited. I’m not allowed to say anything except that it’s awesome!” “We have the perfect cast,” she continued. “When you look at Kyle, you see someone who used to fly jets and embodies Hal. When you look at Aaron, his heart soul, and strength are so John Stewart. It’s so perfect. It’s going to be awesome.” While King is helping create Lanterns, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, based on her and Bilquis Evely’s comic book of the same name, is also in the casting process.

So far, Milly Alcock has joined the project as Supergirl, Eve Ridley as Ruthie Marye Knoll, and Matthias Schoenaerts as Krem of the Yellow Hills, with King saying, “It’s been surreal, man. It’s been surreal [laughs]. Yeah, the Supergirl thing coming together.” “I just posted it on Instagram, but the main character is named after my little niece, Ruthye, so to go to her and say, ‘You’re going to do a movie,’ and see her face light up… that’s one of the joys of my life. It’s exciting,” he concluded. Lanterns does not yet have a confirmed release date, but it is expected to hit HBO in 2026. As for Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, it will hit theaters on June 26 of the same year.

What will Lanterns be about

DC Studios’ Lanterns follows new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops caught up in a dark Earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the heartland of America. Chris Mundy (True Detective: Night Country) serves as showrunner and executive producer and will write Lanterns alongside Damon Lindelof (Watchmen) and comic book writer Tom King (Supergirl). Lanterns do not yet have a confirmed air date.

Lanterns is the story of a pair of Green Lanterns

Production on Lanterns is currently scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2025 in the UK, potentially putting the show on track for a 2026 release. Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardner, who will make his debut in James Gunn’s Superman reboot, is expected to have a supporting role in the series. Hal Jordan was previously played by Ryan Reynolds in the infamous 2011 film Green Lantern. “This is the story of a pair of Green Lanterns John Stewart and Hal Jordan,” Gunn said of the project when it was first announced. “There are other Green Lanterns scattered around, but this is really a TV series set on Earth, almost like True Detective, with a pair of Green Lanterns who are space cops who stake out Precinct Earth and uncover a terrifying mystery that ties into our larger DCU story.”

Emmy Award-winning Lost and Watchmen creator Damon Lindelof is penning the pilot script alongside Ozark showrunner Chris Mundy and acclaimed comic book writer Tom King. Justin Britt-Gibson, Breannah Gibson, and Vanessa Baden Kelly are also said to be on board (though that hasn’t been confirmed yet). Lanterns is expected to begin production in the first quarter of 2025 in the UK, which could put the series on track for a 2026 release. Lanterns don’t yet have a confirmed premiere date.
