Among the series that have most marked the early years of the new millennium, we cannot fail to mention Smallville, the series developed by screenwriters/producers Alfred Gough and Miles Millar focused on the origins of the beloved superhero Superman played by Tom Welling. The latter, in October 2021, on the occasion of the twentieth anniversary of the show, had confessed to being working together with Michael Rosenbaum (interpreter of Lex Luthor) to develop an animated sequel series. Since then, little or nothing has been known about the project. Recently, however, the star has revealed some important updates.

Will the animated sequel series of Smallville be made? The words of Tom Welling

Interviewed by the well-known site Screenrant, Tom Welling shared the latest updates on the development of the sequel series of Smallville. The actor revealed that the project is not moving forward and that Warner Bros. Television, the studio that co-produced the original series, has not yet given the green light. “The honest answer is that we have not been able to get the green light from Warner Bros. We need their permission.” He then added with a bitter laugh:

“We haven’t even gotten a response!” The star then emphasized that the desire to bring the animated series Smallville to the small screen is not just for financial reasons: “We all like each other, we like working together and if we could do it, it would be fun,” he continued. “But Warner Bros., and I’m not hating them for this, has not responded to us yet. It’s not a priority for them. It’s like, ‘They’re not returning their calls.’ I think because it’s not a great financial benefit to anyone, it’s becoming less of a priority.” In short, not great news for fans of the series, but there’s hope.
