Michael Dorman, who plays the role of the pirate king Gold Roger in the live-action version of "ONE PIECE" (2023-) on Netflix, revealed that he had a special connection to the original manga by Eiichiro Oda even before he appeared in the film. In an interview with Man of Many, Dorman said, "One Piece is a book that I gave to my son as a present. It was the first book my son read," talking about how it is a special work for his family. Many of the cast and staff of the live-action version have revealed that they or their children are fans of comics and anime, and Dorman, who plays Roger, is one of them.
Roger only appears in the live-action version at the beginning of the first episode, but Dorman looks back and says, "It was a really fun experience." "Although it was a very short scene, I was able to play a character who is responsible for the beginning of the story. He is the king of pirates and the spark that ignites this adventure. I was blessed with wonderful people, a beautiful time, and a wonderful environment, and it was a great experience." Initially, Dorman was offered a different role instead of Roger, but he turned it down due to scheduling conflicts.
"When I first heard about it, I was offered a role that would take several months to film. I wanted to appear in a work that my son loves, but I didn't have the time, so I respectfully declined," he said. However, after that, he was asked again, "How long can you participate?" and it was decided that he would play the role of Roger for a short period of two weeks in Cape Town. Dorman's high level of reproduction of Roger has been well received by fans of the original work, so his son's reaction is also interesting.
By the way, David Dastmalchian, who was selected to play Mr. 3 in season 2, also revealed that "my son has been reading the original manga for a long time." He said that his home is decorated with "ONE PIECE" colors and that "he really likes it." The manga "ONE PIECE" by Eiichiro Oda is a story about the adventures of the Straw Hat Pirates, led by Luffy, in search of the "One Piece" treasure left behind by the legendary pirate king Gold Roger. It has been serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump since 1997 and has currently reached 110 volumes. The total number of copies published worldwide has exceeded 500 million.
