The preview data confirm that the musical Wicked will mark a blockbuster opening weekend at the US Box Office. According to data provided by Deadline, the musical from Universal Pictures has collected 19.2 million dollars from the various previews organized on North American soil. The reported estimate includes the 2.5 million from the Monday previews organized by Amazon (in 750 theaters), those on Wednesday in about 2,000 theaters between Canada and the USA for 5.7 million, and the standard Thursday previews in about 3,300 theaters for 11 million.
With such a fragmented distribution, it was difficult to make comparisons with the past, so analysts limited themselves to taking into consideration only the overall figure (19.2 million): in this regard, in 2019 The Lion King collected 23 million, a few years later the Barbie phenomenon collected 22.3 million (even in that case there was a sort of fragmentation of the takings), while the live-action Beauty and the Beast collected 16.3 million. The reported figures and the results then set over the weekend, pushed analysts to place Wicked towards a debut of around 120 million dollars. A triumph!
Gladiator 2 | The takings of US previews
The much-talked-about Gladiator 2 also made its debut in the American weekend. The new film directed by Ridley Scott has grossed an estimated $6.5 million from the classic Thursday previews in 3,200 theaters. The amount collected is very similar to other genre films, such as Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (6.6 million), No Time to Die (6.3 million), and Bad Boys for Life (6.3 million): in this regard, the tracking for the debut weekend of Gladiator 2 is close to $65 million. In this case, the R-rated rating also weighs, which limits its possibilities, and this is despite the excellent reviews from the public which offer an 84% on Rotten Tomatoes (the critics stopped at 72%). We will be sure to update you on the takings of these two films over the next few days.
